Posing can be quite a stressful thing for so many of us. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years of being a photographer, it’s been that posing, more than anything else, can make or break a great image. While there are many things a photographer takes into consideration when posing people, here are some basic tips that you can work on yourself, so no matter what photographer you have, you will be spot-on your posing and look amazing in your photos.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BASE-ics
-
Set the base…your feet. Even if your feet or legs are not showing in the picture, the way your feet are positioned has an effect on how the rest of your body looks, and how comfortable you feel, which will come across in how comfortable you look in your pictures.
-
It is all about that bass! Point the toe of your front foot toward the camera and shift your weight to your back leg. This naturally pushes your hips away from the camera, making you look much slimmer.
-
Imaginary String…You want to ensure your spine is straight, but NOT stiff and unnatural. Just stand tall and with good posture. Imagine a string pulling the top of your head. You want to lengthen that spine, get it a little straighter but keeping that natural curve in your lower back.
-
Shoulders…As you lengthen your spine, pull your shoulders back a bit. This brings further confidence and beauty to your pose. Most of us slump down, or slouch as our natural "comfy" position. Where ever you are right now, try it. Stand a little taller, roll those shoulders back. See? Don't you feel more confident?
Even though you can’t see her feet or legs, she has her weight shifted to the back and her front foot pointed forward. She is standing tall and has her shoulders rolled back.
